RULLO UNITES FELLOW REPUBLICANS THAT LIBERAL DEMOCRATS TRY TO DIVIDE

Rullo wants GOP nomination to run against Adler in 3rd Congressional District

By LEE PROCIDA

Staff Writer

A former Democratic freeholder candidate and recent Republican campaign organizer is adding his name to the growing list of Republicans running for the party’s nomination in the 3rd Congressional District race.

Joseph Rullo, 40, of Toms River, said he is going through the process to be endorsed by the Ocean County Republican Organization, but said he would still run in the primary even if not backed by the party.

“We are absolutely running regardless,” he said Monday, already having opened a campaign headquarters in Lakehurst, filed Federal Election Commission paperwork and launched a campaign Web site — rullo4congress2010.com.

The owner of Today’s Solar Energy in Toms River, Rullo worked on now-Deputy Freeholder Director John “Jack” Kelly’s unsuccessful primary campaign for the 3rd Congressional seat in 2008.

Despite Republican fears that a contentious primary could lead to another defeat in the general election, Rullo said he thought an open primary would be in the party’s best interest.

“We believe this election can’t be won unless the primary is open,” he said, explaining that it would take a line of attack away from Democrats that the candidates are simply handpicked by party leaders.

He also said he believes he is the only Republican who can win support in the district’s three counties — Ocean, Burlington and Camden — because of his experience working on Kelly’s campaign.

Kelly said Rullo was “energetic” as one of his many volunteers, but did not want to discuss his attributes in depth so as not to give the impression of favoring one candidate over another.

Burlington County Republican Chairman William Layton said he had not heard of Rullo or his candidacy until contacted  Monday by The Press of Atlantic City.

Layton said he wished Rullo luck, but thought the keys to winning the upcoming election would be name recognition, fundraising ability and a personal story to contrast with Democratic Rep. John Adler.

Ocean County Republican Chairman George Gilmore said Rullo had reached out to him saying Rullo was interested in running but not that he would be running in the primary regardless of the county’s selection process results.

Gilmore said county organizations are put in place for the purpose of deciding what is best for the party as a whole, and that a contested primary would only weaken its chances in the general election.

“If we get in a primary fight, regardless of where candidates are coming from, it’s not a good thing for keeping the unity of the party and focusing our attention on Mr. Adler and his record,” he said.

Rullo, who plans to formally kick off his campaign at a fundraiser Feb. 18 at the Toms River Quality Inn, said he changed parties after a 32,000-vote defeat in the 1997 race for the Board of Chosen Freeholders.

A lifelong Democrat at the time, who ran in a primary when he was 17 years old for the Beachwood Borough Council, he said he noticed “discrepancies” in the Democratic line of attacks against Republicans.

“I started to see good government with the Republicans,” he said, and subsequently changed his allegiance.

Rullo said he did not want to be considered an outsider in the upcoming race. He said he hoped to be supported by the party, and would eventually yield to whomever wins the primary for the general election.

“I believe I’ve stood the test of the organization,” he said, adding, “That’s something I’ve been doing for 12 years.”

He also expressed frustration that Gilmore and party officials have not publicly named him as a viable candidate for the primary, especially since he felt he has done more to prepare in recent months than the other candidates publicly mentioned such as Jon Runyan and Maurice “Mo” Hill.

“I think a lot of people are disturbed that my campaign seems to be underground,” he said. “Why wouldn’t my name be brought up? It’s just odd.”

Gilmore said he did not bring up Rullo’s name because he had not spoke with him directly, while Rullo said he had called and e-mailed Gilmore a number of times to schedule a meeting.

Gilmore replied that it was nevertheless disappointing that Rullo would announce he would run in the primary regardless of whom the party selects without first going through the selection committees and convention.

“So let’s go through process and see where it takes us,” Gilmore said.

RULLO CREDITS FREEDOM OF PRESS FOR OPEN PRIMARY OF 2010 IN 3rd DISTRICT

Press Releases Below are some of hundreds that started the process of Democracy in 3rd District

As Reported in Asbury Park Press:  Rullo's Announcement---Which attracted local media attention mainly because no other candidate from Ocean County has stepped forward in such an organized and public display.  --Eric Larsen APP.com

WOBM FM RADIO or WOBM.com :   Toms River businessman Joe Rullo says he will force a primary...  Rullo says he wants the voters to decide who the best person will be to defeat Democrat John Adler. A grand opening of his solar powered headquarters takes place Thursday at 4 pm on Union Avenue in Lakehurst.

As Reported in PolitickerNJ.com  “I’m the frontrunner in Ocean County.  Our name recognition polls are showing in excess of 90%-10%,” he said.  “I absolutely am in for the long haul.”  Rullo statements taken From PolitickerNJ.com

As Reported in Asbury Park Press:  Joseph Rullo, 40, of Toms River, who is seeking the Republican nomination for Congress to run against Democratic Rep. John Adler, said that if elected he would work to repeal the legislation.  "This is little more than a Democratic jobs bill that will be used for patronage," said Rullo, an owner and operator of a solar energy company. "What Obama should be doing is making the stimulus package better instead of this bill. "What he's doing is blatantly dodging and taking attention from the failure of the stimulus bill by trying to pass this health care bill," Rullo said before the House vote.    Staff writers Matthew McGrath, Jim McConville and Keith Ruscitti contributed to this story.  Find article at http://www.app.com

As Reported On WOBM Radio or WOBM.com: Ocean County is home to several pioneering alternative energy projects. They include the Toms River and Lacey school districts, the county-operated solar farm at the Southern facility in Stafford, and Ocean Gate's first-in-the-state municipal wind turbine. Congressional hopeful Joe Rullo of Toms River completed a solar installation at a Lakehurst laundromat in his private business last month, and progress is moving on the federal level to create offshore wind farms.

Will John Adler Continue His Party’s Empty Jobs Rhetoric?

Democrats Push Another Quick-Fix Jobs Bill Despite the Dismal Stimulus Results

Washington- As Americans continue to feel the pinch of high unemployment and a struggling economy, Democrats continue to deliver the same tired rhetoric that they’ve relied on for the past year. In his State of the Union address, President Obama repeatedly emphasized the importance of job creation and putting Americans back to work. Unfortunately, it’s not the first time struggling middle-class New Jersey families have heard these empty promises from Washington Democrats. John Adler and his party leaders promised their quick-fix ‘stimulus’ was going to lead to economic recovery and job creation. But one year later, the outlook is still grim for the middle class. The question needs to be asked: Will John Adler continue to use his party’s empty jobs rhetoric?

“’People are out of work. They are hurting. They need our help. I want a jobs bill on my desk without delay,’ the president said during his State of the Union speech.’” (Jeanne Cummings, “Economists: Jobs fix won't be quick,” Politico, 1/27/2010)

Not surprisingly, the Democrats’ rhetoric sounds exactly the same as it did one year ago:

“’Only eight days after the President took the oath of office, the House passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that will create and save 3 to 4 million jobs, cut taxes for 95 percent of American workers and make smart investments that will strengthen our economy for the long-term.

“’In his Inaugural Address, President Obama pledged, ‘action, bold and swift…not only to create new jobs, but to lay a foundation for growth.’  Congress will deliver on the President’s pledge by quickly sending the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to his desk.’” (“Pelosi: Today’s Report on Economy’s Contraction Underscores Need to Pass Economic Recovery Package,” Speaker Pelosi Press Release, 1/30/2009)

Economists aren’t buying the Democrats’ rhetoric and New Jersey families won’t either:

“President Barack Obama’s job-creation program could produce a short-term political boost, but it’s unlikely to significantly stem job losses and reduce the unemployment rate anytime soon, according to economists.”

“’He’s trying to turn his microeconomic policies into some macroeconomic solution. He’s grasping at straws,’ said Peter Morici, an economist at the University of Maryland.” (Jeanne Cummings, “Economists: Jobs fix won't be quick,” Politico, 1/27/2010)

“After struggling for the past year, middle-class New Jersey families are still waiting for real answers while Washington Democrats continue to kick around the same tired anti-jobs policies that have driven the economy off a cliff,” said NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain. “With almost 3.4 million jobs lost since John Adler first approved his party’s so-called stimulus bill, it’s abundantly clear that the Democrats’ quick-fix economic policies are a failure. After rubber-stamping his party’s first economic flop, will Adler continue pushing their empty rhetoric?”

I am running for congress because I can contribute

to taking back the house for Republicans
in New Jersey's 3rd Congressional District.

Before losing to John Adler, Republicans held the 3rd District
for 24 years. With the support of Republicans in the three counties,
we can win it back in 2010.

I can win the primary because I am the only Republican candidate

who can win the support of all three counties - Ocean, Burlington, and Camden.
In addition, because of my district wide support and my relationships outside the district,
I can raise the necessary money to win this race.
